Antoine Court de Gébelin was a French occultist, Freemason, and clergyman who is known for his significant influence on the development of the symbolism and interpretation of tarot cards. He wrote about tarot in his book "The Primitive World" in 1781, where he argued that tarot cards were not just a game or a tool for divination, but actually had ancient roots in Egypt. He believed that the tarot was a book of knowledge that had been passed down through the ages and that the cards represented the secrets of the universe.

Gébelin's ideas about the tarot helped to establish the cards as a tool for divination and personal development, rather than just a game. He also popularized the idea that the tarot was a symbol system that could be used to access knowledge of the past, present, and future, as well as insights into the self.

Gébelin's ideas about tarot had a significant impact on the way the cards were perceived and used by occultists and mystics of the time. His work helped to establish the tarot as a powerful tool for personal and spiritual growth, and his theories about the cards' ancient origins helped to create a sense of mystery and intrigue around the tarot that persists to this day.

It's worth noting that Gébelin's theories about the tarot's origin in Egypt have been largely discredited by modern scholars and researchers, however his impact on the tarot symbolism, interpretation and usage was significant.
